Syntax police

Today's New York Times: "...the crash appeared to be an accident and might have occurred when the ferry’s engines appeared to malfunction."

This says to us that the ferry captain was captivated by malfunctioning-looking engines, instead of driving his boat, thereby smooshing his ferry into a pier.

Try this instead: "...the crash appeared to be an accident, possibly due to an engine malfunction."
